What You Should Know About the
"Orange Printer"

You probably know that if you try to walk out of a department store with unpaid merchandise, an alarm will sound. This is because of small security stickers or tags that are attached to merchandise to prevent shoplifting. However, those same security tags are also used to prevent you from using more affordable brands of labeling supplies in your DuraLabel Pro. Who would've thought?

The technology behind many anti-theft tags is known as RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification. Over the past decade, RFID tags have become increasingly mainstream, being used to prevent theft, track shipments, allow/deny access into buildings, and now, to lock you into using only DuraLabel brand supplies. Here is a quick look under the hood of a DuraLabel Pro label printer.

DuraLabel Pro RFID Layout

Each RFID transponder tag, located on the core of every roll of DuraLabel Pro vinyl, is encoded with a proprietary "unlock" code, as well as a preset life span to prevent reusing.

TSC Auto ID in Taiwan is the manufacturer of the TTP-245/343 series label printer, which we offer here at Cascade Labeling. However, a "Private Label" edition was also manufactured exclusively for Graphic Products, Inc., which comes in an orange case and utilizes a proprietary RFID system. This printer was named the DuraLabel Pro.

Every roll of DuraLabel Pro label stock has an encoded RFID tag applied to its cardboard core, usually hidden under a promotional sticker. When this RFID tag is within range of the DuraLabel Pro’s RFID antenna and is detected as being valid and not expired, the DuraLabel Pro allows printing. If this tag is not present, as is the case with other brands of supplies such as ours, the DuraLabel Pro will not print. Don’t believe it? Use scissors to cut off a couple feet of label material from a roll of DuraLabel Pro vinyl. Set the roll a few feet away from the printer, and then load the cut strip of vinyl into the printer. When you try to print a label, you will find that the printer stops midway or possibly after the first label and then the power/activity LED begins blinking, signaling an RFID error. This is the RFID system in action, preventing you from using supplies that do not contain a proprietary DuraLabel RFID tag.
